Judge Halts Sales of Ticket Scalping Software

from the Associated Press

Judge Bars RMG From Ticketmaster

Judge Bars RMG Technologies From Selling Software to Be Used on Ticketmaster Web Site

Monday October 15, 4:16 pm ET
NEW YORK (AP) -- A federal judge ordered RMG Technologies on Monday to stop selling software that lets users flood the Ticketmaster Web site with requests and snap up tickets in bulk, beating the humans who log in manually to buy tickets.

"We will not allow others to illegally divert tickets away from fans," Ticketmaster Chief Executive Sean Moriarty said in a statement. Ticketmaster is a leading seller of concert and sporting event tickets.

U.S. District Judge Audrey Collins issued a preliminary injunction in Los Angeles on Monday.

The company argues that the software programs have allowed ticket brokers "to cut to the front of the line and deprive customers of fair access to tickets." Ticketmaster is owned by IAC, the New York-based Internet conglomerate controlled by media mogul Barry Diller. IAC owns many online businesses including LendingTree, Match.com, Citysearch, Evite and the search engine Ask.com.

RMG sells software to ticket brokers or their suppliers, who resell the tickets at a higher price. Ticketmaster has been battling competitors in the secondary ticketing market, such as StubHub, which is growing rapidly. The success of resellers shows the primary ticket sale price may not have been as high as it could have.

"We recognize and respect the necessity and reality of a vibrant resale market, but we will not tolerate those who seek an unfair advantage through the use of automated programs," Moriarty said in the statement.

Ticketmaster, with headquarters in West Hollywood, Calif., operates in 20 countries with 6,500 retail outlets and 20 call centers around the world.

Bruce Springsteen Reveals Tour Details

Bruce Springsteen, E Street Band reveal tour details

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have announced the dates for their first full-scale tour of the US and Europe since 2003.

The North American leg launches Oct. 2 in Hartford, CT--the same day the band's new album, "Magic," is set to drop. The outing is scheduled to visit 16 cities from coast to coast, including two-night stands at East Rutherford, NJ's Continental Airlines Arena and New York City's Madison Square Garden. The itinerary is listed below. Ticket sales begin Sept. 8, according to a press release.

When the US/Canadian run wraps Nov. 18 in Boston, The Boss and company will head for Europe. Those dates can be found at Springsteen's website.

On tour, Springsteen will be joined by E Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan, saxman/percussionist Clarence Clemons, keyboardist Danny Federici, guitarist Nils Lofgren, vocalist/guitarist Patti Scialfa, bassist Garry Tallent, guitarist Steven Van Zandt and drummer Max Weinberg.

"Magic" is Springsteen's first new studio recording with the E Street Band since 2002's Grammy-winning, multi-platinum album "The Rising." The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's longtime manager, Jon Landau, described the record in a statement as "a high energy rock CD," adding, "It's light on its feet, incredibly well played by Bruce and the members of the E Street Band, and, as always, has plenty to say."

The set's first single, "Radio Nowhere," is available free for one week via Apple's iTunes Music Store starting today (8/28).

Van Halen Adds Tour Dates

Van Halen adds shows

August 20, 2007 08:08 PM

Van Halen , who last week announced plans for a fall tour with reinstated frontman David Lee Roth at the helm, have added some new dates to the run after posting strong ticket sales over the weekend.

According to tour promoter Live Nation, the band's previously announced stops in Charlotte, NC; the Detroit area; Toronto; the Chicago area; and Philadelphia sold out shortly after tickets hit the box office. The group has since booked a second show at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center, a new stop at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena, and the tour's first Washington, DC, date. Tickets for the Philly and Detroit shows are scheduled to go on sale Saturday (8/25), while those for the Washington performance will roll out Friday (8/24), according to a press release.

The group's itinerary--which, as previously reported, begins in late September--now comprises a total of 29 shows that are scattered through mid-December. Details are shown below.

Van Halen's upcoming tour will be the band's first to feature Roth since the motor-mouthed frontman left the group in 1985. Ironically, the tour will not feature the group's original lineup, as guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen have replaced original bassist Michael Anthony with Eddie's 16-year-old son, Wolfgang Van Halen.

Anthony last toured with Van Halen during the group's 2004 reunion with vocalist Sammy Hagar , who took over for Roth from 1985 through 1996. That outing ended when Hagar and Eddie Van Halen had another falling out, and Anthony has since gone all-in with Hagar; the two have been touring together regularly, and, as previously reported, will head back out in October for a 60-date run that will feature the duo performing a slew of Van Halen material.

Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello to Co-Headline Fall Tour

Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello team up for fall tour

August 20, 2007 03:08 PM

Fans seeing Bob Dylan on tour this fall will get to see two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers for the price of one, with Elvis Costello serving as Dylan's opening support on the trek.

With Dylan and his band claiming top billing during the outing--which kicks off Sept. 22 in Duluth, GA--Costello will warm up crowds along the way by playing his first solo shows in 12 years, according to his publicist. Singer/songwriter Amos Lee will offer additional opening support during the tour.

Dylan, minus Costello and Lee, will also tackle a Sept. 16 slot at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX; a Sept. 19 show in Nashville features Lee but not Elvis. The Costello/Dylan pairing will hit 13 cities in all. Dates are shown below.

Dylan is touring to support the Oct. 1 release of a three-disc, 51-track career retrospective. Simply titled "Dylan," the set will also be made available in a streamlined, 18-song, single-disc version, which will also carry the same title. A deluxe edition will consist of the 3-CD version enclosed in a cloth-covered case, with an extended liner-notes booklet and 10 limited-edition postcards included inside.

Last year, Dylan offered up "Modern Times," his first new studio set since 2001's "Love and Theft." The 2006 disc, which is the folk legend's 44th album, features 10 new Dylan originals he recorded with his touring band: guitarists Stu Kimball and Denny Freeman, multi-instrumentalist Donnie Herron, bassist Tony Garnier and drummer George Recile. Dylan sang and played keyboards, guitars and harmonica.

Costello's most recent release is a collaboration with New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint recorded last June in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. "The River in Reverse"--which comprises seven songs from Toussaint's catalog, the title track by Costello, and five new tunes penned by the two together--earned them a Grammy nomination. The album was followed by the DVD "Hot as a Pistol, Keen as a Blade," which captures a live show from last year's Costello/Toussaint tour.

Morrissey Plans Residencies on Fall Trek

Morrissey plans residencies on fall trek

August 20, 2007 03:08 PM

Morrissey has added a fall run to his North American tour, and will play multi-show residencies in several major markets along the way.

The British alt-rock icon hit the road in April and has so far visited nearly 50 cities in the US. The final leg of the jaunt will kick off Sept. 20 in Tijuana, Mexico, and then hit US cities from coast to coast through early November.

The trek includes four performances in San Francisco, 10 in Los Angeles and five in New York City. Some of the gigs will make up for dates Morrissey canceled last month due to illness.

Alternative singer/songwriter Kristeen Young continues to fill the support slot on the tour, details of which are listed below.

Morrissey, who rose to prominence in the '80s as the singer for influential British band The Smiths, released his eighth solo album, "Ringleader of the Tormentors," last year. A few songs from the set are streaming at his MySpace page, where the full album is available for download.

In related news, Morrissey is the subject of a forthcoming film documentary, "Passions Just Like Mine," according to Urban Cowgirl Productions' website.

"What causes people to become obsessed over someone they don't know and have very little in common with? 'Passions Just Like Mine' will investigate this question," the production company explains at its website. "The stories will be told through the eyes of the fans themselves. ... We will follow these fans to Smiths tribute shows and Morrissey conventions as well as through neighborhoods and family homes."

The film is currently in postproduction.

Van Halen to Announce Reunion Tour with David Lee Roth

Van Halen Reunites! Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth Live News Conference

One of the most most important and influential rock bands of all time, Van Halen, will be holding a special live news conference with an "announcement of monumental proportions" today.

Van Halen has twice attained Diamond status, given only to artists selling more than 10 million albums in the U.S. The Guinness Book of World Records cites Van Halen as having amassed more #1 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart than any other band in history. The band was inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame in March of this year.

Fans of the belove rock band have waited and wondered for years if the foursome -- Eddie Van Halen-guitarist, David Lee Roth-vocalist, Alex Van Halen-drummer, and Michael Anthony-bassist -- would ever reunite and do another world tour. There was much reported acrimony amongst band members, however, as singer-guitarist Sammy Hagar stepped into the frontman vocalist role when David Lee Roth bowed out.

True aficionados have never really accepted the "Van Hagar" match, and longed for the days of good old Roth/Van Halen rock and roll. It seems they may finally, after many false starts, get their wish.

Fast-forward to 2007, and plan on hearing about the long-awaited reunion with a Q&A components with old bandmates Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen back in front of the cameras, with a slight change and Eddie's 16-year-old son, Wolfgang Van Halen, joins the team in place of Michael Anthony on bass.

The live news conference will take place at 2:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.

Peter Bjorn and John Announce More U.S. Shows

Peter Bjorn and John plot new American shows

August 9, 2007 08:08 PM
As the settles on indie-pop trio Peter Bjorn and John summer North American outing, the Swedish act has lined up another headlining run for early fall.

The group, which played the final show of its mid-summer US tour last night in Nashville, has already plotted yet another return to North America with a 14-city trek that kicks off Sept. 6 in New York City.

The outing includes appearances at the Sept. 8 Osheaga Festival in Montreal and the following day's Virgin Festival in Toronto. All dates are shown below.

Peter Bjorn and John are touring behind "Writer's Block," their most recent studio album. Released in February, the set is the group's third full-length effort, and follows 2005's "Falling Out." A pair of videos from the new album--"Young Folks" and "Objects of My Affection"--are streaming at the group's website.

In other recent PB & J news, the trio has accepted an invitation to accompany Kanye West to Gothenburg, Sweden's Aug. 11 Way Out West festival and appear as the hip=hop star's backing band, according to MTV News.

"We are absolutely confirmed to do it," the group's Peter Moren told MTV. "He's going to rap on a song and we're going to play along and I'm going to dance. But I don't know specifics, like, what we're gonna do. Just jam around a bit. I may have to choreograph a dance routine. I have to check out his videos and see what he's doing. Maybe we will put on some new suits. You know, sweat pants? Gymnastic outfits--what do you call them? Tracksuits?"

"I guess he seems to be a nice guy," Moren said of West, who earlier this year appeared on an underground mixtape performing a freestyle rap over the Swedish trio's latest single, "Young Folks."

46 Arrested At Korn Concert In New Jersey

46 Arrested At Korn Concert In New Jersey

NJ Star Ledger:

At PNC concert, a repeat performance by police

Friday, August 10, 2007
BY MARYANN SPOTO
Star-Ledger Staff

Authorities arrested 46 people at a Korn concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel and charged most of them with underage drinking, State Police said yesterday.

The arrests Wednesday night continue a crackdown on minors drinking at the performance venue, where for years tailgating and alcohol consumption have gone hand-in-hand for many attendees.

In the most recent arrests, 30 of the 46 were charged with underage drinking. The other 16 are facing other offenses, including drug possession, resisting arrest, assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and serving alcohol to a minor, said State Police Capt. Kevin Burke, who headed the effort. Most of those arrested were from New York and northern New Jersey, he said.

Despite the widespread publicity about the crackdown, State Police continue to make a relatively high number of arrests at concerts they believe will attract younger crowds, he said.

"Maybe they think they're not going to get caught, I don't know," he said. "We remain vigilant in what we're doing. We're going to be out here. We're not changing what we're doing."

Of the 30 charged with underage drinking, four were under 18. The youngest of the alleged underage drinkers was 16, State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Jeanne Hengemuhle said.

"Kids are just not learning, and this is a prime example of it," she said. "If you're under 21, you shouldn't be drinking."

At the June 6 Fall Out Boy concert, State Police made 49 arrests on underage drinking charges. The youngest person charged was 14.

The vigilance came after a May 18 Gwen Stefani performance when 15 concertgoers -- 13 of them minors -- were rushed to Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel for alcohol-related illnesses.

"As much as we're trying to get the word out, we can't do this alone," Burke said. "Enforcement is certainly not a panacea to this issue. We're looking for parents to spread the word."

One man was charged with aggravated assault because he punched a security guard and then injured a state trooper who came to the guard's aid, Burke said.

Trying to score seats to a sold-out show? Savvy concertgoers reveal eight proven strategies to get you in.

By Joey Arak Illustrations by Ian Keltie

When Arcade Fire’s recent New York shows went on sale, the difficulty quotient of scoring tickets ranked somewhere between solving Rubik’s Cube while blindfolded and managing to watch an entire episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos without seeing a guy get hit in the nuts. In the age of online ticket selling, rampant scalping and music blogs clueing in every Tom, Dick and IT guy to new music, it’s no surprise that hot-ticket concerts sell out their supply faster than a Meatpacking District coke dealer. TONY knows your pain, so we’ve assembled eight strategies—including getting freaky—to help you end up inside the walls of a sold-out show, along with tales of glory from the successful. Study up, and maybe we’ll see you at the Police gig, swooning over Sting’s cheekbones. If you’re lucky.
